Walked up and down there thousands of times, from King Edward Road to Broadgate in 50s/60s.

If I remember the Orchid Ballroom was just to the left of the picture, and Hansons record store was on the corner to the right. Also on the opposite corner to Hansons was a small shop where you could buy all sorts of odd stuff, a kind of surplus store.

If you look closely at the picture you can see that one of the shops has vegetables displayed on the pavement. On the weekends nearly all the produce shops would put out goods on the street.

St Peter's Church is upper right. Yardley St is directly opposite. Cannot work out how many streets are visible and therefore whether the street nearest the front (with shop) is Raglan St, Winchester St or Colchester St. My great grandparents lived in Lower Nelson St in 1891 which must be somewhere on Prof's pic saved by Lauri of Hillfields (post 331)

I think the butterfly flats are in Yardley St. In between the flats and St Peter's, slightly lower down, is the chapel on the corner of Vine St which was used by Freddies and the shop front is the back side window of Brightwalls the decorators shop. Most of the area you see was demolished. I cannot remember the name of the side street that Brightwalls ran up but there was a pub on the other corner. Thumbs up PS, sorry but I am relating to the photo, on the map it is out of view to the upper left.

This might help! I think the street was Castle Street

I wrongly assumed that the photo was taken from the right side of the map towards the left side but I now realise that the square spire at St Peter's was at the other end of the church and that photo was taken from city centre end towards the football ground. I was hoping to find a photo of great grandparents' house in either Lower Nelson St or Vauxhall Terrace.

Yes scrutiny, I cannot remember the name of the pub but I know it was independent of any brewery chain (Free House was the term) but my dad, whose aunt and uncles kept licensed premises, told me that one day when we passed on the bus.

Photo 14.The house in Hillfields looks very like the St Peter's Vicarage, Brook St, right at the end of the shot.

Post 20. NormK gives a better view of the Vicarage. Guarantees it is the same as in Photo 14.

Sorry Prof, definitely not the Vicarage in photo 14. In NormK pic (post 20) top right is the Vicarage, to the right of the big tree. The Vicarage stood in its own walled grounds with its entrance by the entrance to Primrose Hill Park, the short side road off Paynes Lane. My area, spent a lot of time at the Vicarage and the gardens parties were held in the grounds around it. I used to help out with them, knew Father Jones and Brother Stuart well who later became Father Stuart, his church being in Rugby. Thumbs up
