Now Mr Dunford rings a bell. Cyril was an avid bowls player too. We must have bumped into Mr D a few times. My two offspring were fitted out with uniforms for St John's school from the Co. Most likely met Mr Brown too as Cyril was given a wonderful send off at his retirement dinner.

Of course I remember our Co-op number. I also remember, in 1947 at the age of ten, being sent to the Co by my dad to buy cigarettes. He had a newsagent shop at the time and ciggies were allocated and short supply, so to keep his customers happy he used to get what he could from the Co which was not a lot and he, my mum and I would take it in turns to go to get them. Then his profit was just the Co-op divi on the sale but it kept another customer happy! Don't ask me how I was sold cigarettes at that age.

As you say he was a very nice person. Mostly the staff with him were ladies but I also worked on the first floor tailoring and school uniforms, and would occasionally be sent downstairs when they were busy. The boss in my time there was a Mr Dunford who was a keen bowls player, and a bigger, taller man upstairs was a Mr Brown.
As 'Mods/Suedeheads' we had embroidered badges in the shape of a shield or crest with our initials on which we sewed on to our blazer (not school obviously), pockets ordered from the upstairs Men's Dept. at the Corporation St. store Thumbs up

Prof, Did you ever pick up on Cyril's Welsh accent. You may have heard him say "That's champion" when showing his approval? He also met Clair Shepherd whilst working at the Co. and married her (my husband's mother). They were so well suited (excuse the pun).

Don't think I remember the accent Dream but my grandad (originally from Grantham) also said "That's Champion!"

My dad's first job in about 1930 was as van boy to the Co-op Bakery. He had to go and fetch the horse from the stables and hitch it to the van and then go round with the van man and take the basket to the doors.

Which Co-op in Radford? We lived in Rollason Road and mum used the one on Burnaby Road. Sometimes, not very often, she went in the one opposite the Whitmore pub

I used to work at the Co-op in the early 60's and am interested in contacting anyone who worked there, particularly in the old grocery shops which had assistants serving the customers, this was obviously pre-self service. But any other anecdotes would be interesting, I worked in the offices from about 1961 through to about 1965. I know there are a couple of other employees who contribute to the site but I am not sure how to add to their postings so I have started a new topic. Thanks
