I can see your point Dutchman, and I think it's a very valid one. To turn off a signature for every individual post would be, like you say, a rather tall order, especially as some members have hundreds or even thousands of posts, and to keep track of so many could be tricky for the members and be quite involved for the database queries. I wonder if a workable alternative might be to have an over on/off setting that you could make, to display or hide your signature for a time?

An on/off switch would be preferable to having to completely delete/rewrite signature Rob. However both phpBB and vBulletin have a box you can tick to determine whether a signature is displayed or not in a particular post so it is theoretically possible. How it works though I haven't a clue, I let others do all the coding for me. Smile

I would have thought this only becomes an "issue" where members constantly change their signatures, therefore making some tag lines "not suitable" for certain previous posts. It's not something that would be a problem to the majority of our members, however, I have suggested a possible workaround to Rob but we'll have to see how viable it would be. Thumbs up

You'd be surprised Tony. There are many forums where I use a "fixed" signature but still omit it on occasion for many different reasons. Smile I also miss the ability to quote from the preceding post but fully understand the reasons that was removed.

I know you are aware Dutchman, but for those that aren't, we must remember that every one of the many, many thousands of lines of code that make the forum what it is, have been written specifically by Rob. An off-the-shelf package it is most certainly not. Any additions and/or changes will have some sort of 'overhead', whether it be complexity in many segments of program code or additional disc-space on the server. Every item of info added to a post also has to be added to thousands of other posts (whether they make use of the feature or not) I'm sure Rob will consider any new feature request carefully, but he has to weigh up the overall gain and usefulness versus physical effort required to create, maintain and support such a feature. Cheers

G'day folks! Now then, when I first considered Dutchman's request I was thinking it would require yet another column in the database to record whether or not that post should display a signature. With over 43,000 posts it seemed a bit of a waste just for the occasional "signature-switch-off"! However, a bit of lateral thinking suddenly came to the fore and I realised that one current column is already utilised for "classes" of posts, which can be: 1. Standard post 2. "Chat" 3. "Question" So, I simply added a 4th class - "No Signature". It only took a few lines of code to add little buttons etc., so now anyone with a signature will notice a little checkbox that can turn on or off the signature for that individual post. It does mean that it cannot also be either "chat" or "question", but I don't think that small limitation will cause any problems. Thumbs up

The checkbox isn't showing for me as yet Rob but I'm aware there are teething problems with any new feature.

I've just added s signature of my own, and it seems to work OK. My guess is that your cache is hanging on to the previous version Dutchman - does Ctrl + F5 force a refresh on your browser?

It does Rob but that didn't work. Nor did clearing the Firefox browser cache. Also tried Chrome and I'm afraid that didn't work either. Sad

Great stuff, thank you! I've added something new, and hopefully helpful, today too. I'm aware that occasionally mails get missed by somehow getting slipped into members' spam or junk folders. So, so help alleviate this, if a member now receives a message a small red flag should appear in the top right hand side of the forum toolbar indicating the number of messages awaiting them - in a similar style to eBay or Facebook "alerts". Thumbs up

It may be just me but links in signatures aren't working at all at present. Superfluous backslash characters are being inserted into the html code and clicking on the link displays only this page: https://www.historiccoventry.co.uk/error.html

We are aware of the problem with backslashes, and as soon as Rob has had his dinner, he will be sorting it out Thumbs up

I think (hope!) the problem is solved now, thank you for being patient. Thumbs up The problem appeared to begin when I uploaded a configuration file to increase the upload memory limit. I can't work out why this had the effect of adding backslashes to "quotes" or 'apostrophes' (the equivalent of turning "magic quotes" on, for anyone familiar) but the problem disappeared when I removed the file again, so it seems to have been the cause of the issue. I've raised the question with the web-hosts in case they can shed some light on it.
