Hello from your roving correspondent. Enjoyed a haggis dinner at Wetherpoons today. £7 odd including a nice spirit. Yummy yummy. Certainly worth another during the ten day promotion.

The Cheylesmore Pub/ The Cheylesmore Inn. Daventry Road. Also, the two photos show the iron railings that were removed in WW2 for the war effort (apparently making things for the war effort however from what I heard it was more of a means to raise morale amongst civilians who felt frustrated and helpless as the majority of the metal recovered was useless????).

Thanks Neil, Friday September 1st, 1939, the day the German Army invaded Poland, precipitating the Second World War & 2 Days before we declared War. What a co-incidence ! The Railing didn't last long then. Sad

Although I am a little confused as to why the photo, in the link that Neil just linked, shows partial railings (1990's??). Was this section not taken down? ??? Not sure why they wouldn't remove all the railing... I know they even removed railings from old graves so couldn't imagine why they'd leave it... 🤔 I know that the railings were cut down on the wall as I can remember walking across it as a child and seeing what was left of the metal still embedded in the wall.

As can be seen in the 2008 Google Street View Image: © Google 2025. Also I was just told by my Dad, and had forgot this, it was actually my Great Grandad who cut the original railings down.

Interesting reading the history of The Holyhead Pub, and Stan Adkins a former landlord, when I recalled the name from my younger days. The hunch paid off, checking the Pub History; Historic Coventry Phantom Coach Stan became landlord of The Phantom Coach from 1969-1975. My grandfather and my uncle, his youngest son, used to frequent The Phantom Coach, and often spoke well of Stan Adkins.

Dean Nelson on FB has this image - I think it might be inside the Coventry Cross in Burges?

I posted a pic we identified later as the New Inn on King William St in post#1623 (this is a long thread!) The Pubs section mentioned it only closed in 1970 so I was surprised there were no other images of it. This one has popped up on FB though -
