There was also a fairly small venue near Courtaulds (it may even have been part of Courtaulds) that was one of the first venues to have UV lights. One of the amusing side effects was that they also made false teeth glow (well it amused me anyway Smile )

I remember seeing this tower as a child when my grandma took me into town. Later to become Tiffany's night club as I recall.

Since I have just joined and searched for the Locarno, I cannot pass this one up without contributing On leave from Merchant navy, must have been 1961/62, met this gorgeous girl there (Locarno) arranged to meet a couple of nights later for a re-visit , at the No 2 bus stop Broadgate, she stepped off the bus, only found out later, her father who was an ex serviceman (RAF), when he found out she wasn`t going to turn up - made her go - we were married for 46 years. I suppose it is out of town, but we also used to go to the Chesford. Also remember going to see Big Bands at the Matrix, I`m sure of Ken Mackintosh, but I have a feeling Ted Heath was there (Hot Diggoty?)

Oh I forgot to mention. My wife once judged a beauty contest at the Locarno, cannot remember when, possibly 1967/8 - she ran an appointments bureau at the time "Heather Heath Bureau" and I have a photo somewhere with a write up in the Standard Has anybody got access to old Standard print?

Living in hillfields through the 50s &60s the place to go was the Orchid ballroom. It used to be cinema in the50s ,I don't recall the name could have been the globe?. Another great place for groups used to be the Hotel Leofric in broadgate , I know the Who played there ,it was a place the Mods used to hangout.

I remember The Orchid ballroom do you remember the girl group called The Orchids, I believe they started singing there hence the name. Talking of Mods does anybody remember the Top Ten café with all the scooters parked outside.

You are catching us up Kaga, sorry but that's life. I too remember the Alexandra and always envisaged it on the corner. Not sure the name of that road though (up the side) but wasn't there a dancing studio situated on the other side of the road. I went there a few times just to make an idiot of myself in my teens.
