Dougie, were you referring to Sellrights for wedding dresses? I bought mine from there 55 yrs ago (August time).

Dreamtime I remember the shop and the display window opposite as if it was yesterday but not the name , but I do remember it cost her two weeks of her wages for the dress. I've asked the wife the name but she can't remember either. 55 years, it's a long time. I'm hoping to reach 60 years all being well, as my three sisters and one brother have already achieved it - fingers crossed.

That`s it Prof. Bank Chambers, thanks for the prompt! Somewhere at the back of my mind comes a name Statham and Fensom. Have you or anybody else heard of it? (Just dug out my Old Boys tie - it`s akin to a piece of string now - I had hoped they might have put a label on it - but no such luck. Spot on Roger, Statham and Fensom. I think my elder brother was a customer, but it was on the expensive side for me.

Evokes many memories for me CKV. Used to cycle from Woodlands School in Broad Lane to have my mid-day meal at Pattison's café. The Geisha also well known to our family. My brother worked for a time in Green's on the camera side before becoming manager of the camera dept at Harrison's High St.

That's the one good thing about this Forum, as lots of the posts and pictures on here must evoke so many memories for such a lot of people and not just for people here in Coventry, but for people all over the world who once lived here!!!!

Yes Geoff, I thought that too. The Queen's Hotel - it had a white sign in the form of a hand holding up a playing card of the Queen of Hearts!

I well remember Kunzle cakes Roger and I guess you are right about the provenance. I think you could buy them as well in Pattison's, Hertford St! As you perhaps are of my generation, Roger we might have been in the Geisha café on Fridays at the same time, as my mother and grandmother met there, and I was usually with them, in the school holidays at least. We got to know one of the waitresses quite well, though I do not recall her name.

Lovely posting Prof, I will treasure the thought that our association on this august site was pre-ordained.rnI think you are right, Friday was the day for a trip "up town" and a meeting with my mother and elder sister at the Geisha.

There wasn't much happened in the bottom part of Hertford street in the middle fifties, except Coventry fire brigade was called one morning to a shop near Greens the chemist. Have no idea what happened but they tried to throw a rope over the roof with little success, from the other side, so they tied a big knot in the end of the rope then threw it, it swung over and the knot swung in with a thump, hit the plate glass window and smashed it. If I remember correctly it became a lot busier when the precinct was a builders yard. I used the street almost daily in the fifties to get to the YMCA, a barbers just below the Geisha, and the post office at the top.
