I think it's unlikely we'll ever know who build the castle mound and why. But it's an interesting and curious thing, and the period it may have been built in is full of intrigue and battles. Speculation is fun.

Hi everyone! I know this is quite an old topic now but the case of Allesley Castle has been of interest to me over the last few months as I have been undertaking a photographic project for my BA focusing on the 'Mysteries' of the Allesley area. I have come across quite a few bits of information that do not seem to have been mentioned on the forum which I am happy to share if anyone is interested? Smile

Yes and me. I grew up playing on that mound and around the park.

Hi all Wave There are several locations in our area that may have been Roman locations, in addition to Baginton & Brinklow. I understand from a friend who is involved with the Allesley Walled Garden project that this location had been listed for a "Time Team" visit.

I did always wonder what could have been there. As mentioned I grew up in Allesley Park - my mum is still there after almost 50 years in the same house. There's still several original homeowners around there from when the development first went up on Lord Iliffe's estate. I used to scare myself silly doing a paper round as a kid which had to deliver to Allesley Hall when the council still had it and there were park wardens living in what are now part of the retirement apartments. It was pitch black in winter going through Castle mound down to the Hall. There's also some interesting old buildings to the side of the mound behind the community 'centre.' I also used to play in what was then the derelict farmhouse behind the stable block and spent long summer hols lazing around the Walled Garden when you could not see over the weeds it was so neglected.

This is a fascinating topic. I used to play in this spinney as a kid and as I drive past it on some occasions I have noticed that a number of trees were recently cut down. It would be amazing to find out more about this location and its history.
