While walking near the Cathedral today I looked down instead of up. I was surprised to see this. It is on Cuckoo Lane near the junction with St Michael's Avenue. The Yorkshire House to House Electric Co. Ltd. supplied Leeds until 1898, when it was brought out by Leeds council, so I'm confused as to how this found its way to Coventry.

Hi all, hi Peter, I don't pretend to know the answer, but much of our pre-war tram technology came from Leeds.

In 1893 a committee from Coventry visited Leeds to look at a station supplied by Messrs John Fowler of Leeds for the Yorkshire House to House Electric Company. Later Messrs John Fowler were contracted to supply equipment for the electric lighting station and mains in Coventry. The works were erected in Sandy Lane. Most likely they utilised covers left over from Leeds. There is a long article in August 1893 stating the different companies they were looking at, but it is too long to put on here. Two acres of land were purchased from Thomas White's Charity for £700 for the works. I have learned something again because my first job was at the EMEB and two of the years were spent on that land!

Thanks Anne, I'm just surprised it has taken me so long to notice it. I must have been walking around that area regularly for at least the last 15 years.
