The expression cul-de-sac comes from French, where it originally meant "bottom of a sack". It was first used in English in anatomy (since 1738). It was used for dead-end streets since 1800 in English (since the 14th century in French) I'm waiting for the contradiction......

When I was little I lived in a house on Mitton Close - I assumed that cul-de-sac was the French translation (the closed end of the mitten) and how very continental to have the signs in 2 languages. Blush

I don't know which was first but Ambler Grove, off Bromleigh Drive, Stoke, and behind Wyver Crescent where I was born was one such, and that's where my dad taught me to ride a two-wheel bike.
