Link to auction site I don't know much about antiques. I would have said this looks a bit arts and crafts but I think the date is a bit late for that.

I suppose there are those that wonder the cost. I paid £58 which I consider quite a good value for a piece that might well be considered museum quality. For the present, it is not going anywhere.

I believe to link to the auction site provided us with the answer to one question. The top quarter section of the enameled section appears to have been broken and the buyer removed the remainder. The copper does show where the broken piece would have been. So the copper is not a recent add-on but was under the enamel piece. Thanks for that valuable piece of info. Dave

When buying things I ask myself if I'd pay the price of a piece if it was brand new. If the answer is 'yes' I've not lost anything if it turns out to be technically worth less than I paid. So if you like it, it's worth the price you paid. Personally I prefer it without the broken badge. The reason for the copper, it that it would have been made as a separate piece. The glass is arranged on the copper and heated to very high temperatures, usually in a tiny oven. If I remember correctly the different colours tend to melt at different temperatures so aren't added in one go and melted at the highest temperature but added, the highest melt first and then the others added one by one. The glass is quite fragile and is prone to cracking if the metal is bent. The enamel panel would have been welded to the rest.

Perhaps someone could look at this if they are anywhere near the Herbert. Report on school children's visit to Portsmouth

One again I would like to thank those who helped out on this. Finding the auction photo was brilliant. I would like to stir the pot one last time. When doing a 3 initial monogram the last initial belongs in the middle. Mine would be dBc not dCb. Perhaps we are looking for a J C D not a J D C? Is this a possibility? Does it make someone much more likely as the benefactor?

davidcbeard, have just visited the salesroom, they couldn't help a lot. They did several house clearances for the council, so they had no names, etc. I then visited the library and they have just moved all their records, phone books etc. to the outskirts of the town, so give me a few more days chasing. Regards, Kaga.

davidcbeard, thinking further on this, throughout the thirties Coventry firms did a lot of outings for kids, and J. Cash was one of them so as JW on post 11 said you could try a relative from the J. Cash firm.

I sent an email to the Herbert and they have looked at the report of the school children's visit to Portsmouth and he says there is no mention of JDC, just a timetable and a report by one of the student teachers. He does suggest that there may be something in the Education Minutes held there if someone had the time to look through them.
