I seem to remember he stood on a box in the middle of the crossroads- must have taken some nerve to do that even when there was much less traffic.

Hi, does anyone have any memories or even a photograph of a garage on Bishop Street in the late 60's that was ran by ex BEES Speedway rider Colin Cottrell?
Thanks in advance

Jeffrey Stevenson on FB has done it again with these terrific shots shared with his permission:
My Grandmother, Maud Stevenson, ran a general grocery shop in Bishop St, one building down from the corner of Lamb St.
The first photo is a pre-war shot and shows her posed on the wing of an Austin car in what I believe is Lamb St. Please note the distinctive windows and timber framing of the shop behind her, which is on the right hand side of Bishop St as you travel up the hill away from the city centre.
The next photo shows her feeding pigs that were kept in a sty outside the building adjacent to the shop. Points to note in the background here are the Stag public house and, at far right, the building in Bishop St with the distinctive windows and wood framing. This sty and part of the building were destroyed in the November bombing. (Whether pigs had been slaughtered before then is not known!) At this time my father had an Avis 12/50 car which was kept in the garage at this building. That was destroyed in the bombing too.
I think thats a very rare capture of the original Stags Head Pub but I'm slightly confused as the second pic with the Pigs shows the later modified Pub in mock-tudor form - I thought that was done much later?
I think the building Jeffrey refers to on Bishop St with the distinctive windows is the one on the left here - would tie-up with the Pubs location -

Can anyone confirm when the Stags Head had its Mock Tudor remodelling? I can see on BFA that it was in its present state on a 1937 Aerial

I don't think it got a remodelling, I think that it was built that way. It was a fenced off building site in June 1926.
Complete by at least 1931

Thanks Helen - I can see "Aston Gilbert Ltd House and Estate Agents and Valuers" (as per the sign behind the pic with Jeffery's Gran) are listed in the 1937 Directory as at No.35 Bihsop Street Chambers. I thought it had been remodelled with the view of the side with the OLD STAG logo looking so different. You can hardly see that northern wall of the Pub now as Pargetters are squeezed right up against it.

There was a little shop (probably timber) between the Stag and Pargetters that lost its top floor during the war. It's why that side has the funny side extension with just render. At some point Pargetters swallowed that plot.
The plot onto which the new Stag was built was on the site of the previous one (extending much further back along the plot) but next door had been the Woodman PH. That was demolished at the same time and the empty plot/car park was created.

Helen looking at that BFA image then I think Jeffreys images must be more 1920s - would you say? BFA is dated 1931 but the vacant plot where The Woodman was has the pigs in doesn't it?

I don't know about the date but I think the piggies are in the next door plot to the vacant lot. The building with the distinctive windows was built by the time the aerial shot was taken in 1931. The sign for the Old Stag is on the end wall of the next building, so as to be seen as you enter/pass the car park.
Addition - thinking about it, they probably had to build/leave a retaining wall to replace the demolished Woodman PH, so giving the owner a right to the wall space for advertising their new pub.
