London Road Cemetery

I suspect the last reason. It's the sort of thing we did as kids, for devilment. Writing something on the wooden desks, or chalking on a random school bag, not even knowing who the owner was. Something that would not make sense to anyone. Not to cause upset, just a bit of fun. Well, boys will be boys! Examples: DRX; Max Glackfield; Ahön (note the umlaut - sounds a bit like Ahab, which everyone had heard of cuz it was in the bible, to make people think a bit, but a completely fictitious name); THE EBC33 BRIGADE (only about three lads in the whole school knew that an EBC33was a Mullard double-diode-triode); PENSCHNITT (sounded German); And so on. But it didn't stop in school. Oh no. Under cover of darkness, we'd sneak up someone's drive (no security cameras in the olden days), then neatly stick two pieces of black insulating tape, about 3" long, on a front door, to form a large + sign. The devil did indeed find work for idle hands. I suspect that the culprits in this latest incident are youngsters. Or someone on something.

Here's how it looks now, the people who cleaned it did a really, really good job!

I would like to find out who owns a plot in the cemetery that relatives of mine were buried in up to the '80's. If no one from the family has been buried there since how do I find out who owns the plot? Thank you.

Robthu might be the expert on the London Road Cemetery but as far as I know plots are more leased than bought in the UK, but I'm not sure when that started. In the past the bones were gathered together and stored or just combined into the soil when they inadvertently dug the previous inhabitant up for a new grave. That was for ordinary people as fancy graves would last until the structure decayed. So generally the plot doesn't belong to the person buried there or their relatives. Though plots can be bought and theoretically passed on to relatives. The leases tend to be between 50 and 100 years. This allows the plots to be recycled eventually. Not sure what they do now with the bodies of expired leases, especially as embalming means that people 'last' longer. Authorities have varied in their attitude but we are running out of places to bury people so recycling plots is becoming more likely. There is outrage every now and then when areas have been cleared for new tenants but until recently they just expanded cemeteries. Leases can be renewed or extended. The cemetery will know what the situation is for existing graves so no need to find relatives that might still exist unless the plot was actually purchased.

Hi Lindatee I am fortunate to still have this document that was my Grandad's he is buried here with his 2 wives and one of his children who died in 1904. It says "in perpetuity". I don't know if the rules are the same today. It does say on the back it is full except for cremated remains. I do have the CD for the graveyard (if I can get it to work ) if you need to know who is buried there.
