I assumed we were talking about the shop on the corner of Lower Ford Street and Far Gosford Street, not the one at the junction of Allesley Old Road and Spon End?

Astons of Coventry had a subsidiary, Auto Invest (Coventry) Ltd, involved in property, finance and insurance, registered at 2b Vecqueray Street, did anyone out there have any dealings with them. Originally Harold Dudley, Bill Aston's father in law, was a director, later on Paul Anthony Fawkes was a director, was Tony Lloyd also involved?

Gardners Garage in Gulson Road now Lota Garage owned and used by Astons and Light Cars was at one time rented out to Rayfield Autos I believe, can any one detail the history of this unit. Does anyone remember a Bill Lewis who worked on sales at the Spon End garage, he was a good friend of Ted Aston?

On 24th Oct 2013 10:28am, mickw said: My brother was a chef at the Black Horse in Marton when Bob Ayres was landlord. I remember that a person called Aston used to drink in there, not sure of the Christian name but having looked at the Aston Coaches Historic Website I found Harry Aston owned two Armstrong Siddeley Sapphires. My brother bought a two tone grey Sapphire from Bob Ayres in the 60s, the registration was RWK610. I wonder if this was one of Harry Aston's Sapphires, it was a lovely car
On 24th Oct 2013 1:26pm, Astons Garages said: I am Harry Aston's son, it would be my father who went in there but could also have been Ted Aston who lived along Birdingbury Road. My father had the Armstrong Siddeleys but he also bought and sold just about any vehicle, do you have any photos of it, will get the numbers checked Was Bob Ayres the landlord that played the cello? Do you have any tales to tell about the Black Horse, Astons Coaches were right opposite, I am also in touch with David Fry of Marton Historical Society who is keen to learn about any history of Marton Please feel free to contact me direct by email.
The person who drank in the pub was possibly Ted Aston as he lived in Marton with his wife Muriel - he certainly did in the 60's. Ted and Muriel also had a place in Spain and I believe they had a speed boat business, my mum and dad went to visit them.

Could've gone in a Spon End thread but I liked the ad.

NeilsYard, I have just looked at those pictures, but weren't they on the bend down in the deep of Gosford Street in the fifties, a good 15 shops from Ford Street, I seem to recall? I knew the sales room manager, thought he was the son of the shop, can't think of his name.

Astons Garages, apols, I think this might be your image anyway, but can you confirm the location - was it Far Gosford Street? Of particular interest to me as mixes my two main interests of Old Cov and Italian cars!

On the photo with all the Fiats parked up in front of Astons, you can just see the open door of a BMW Isetta in the showroom, and I believe either another Isetta or Heinkel alongside it. I know they used to supply spares for Messerschmitt three wheelers as Astons is listed in the list of creditors owed money by Beulah Engineering in London who were Messerschmitt suppliers until they went bust in 1956/57.
