He was a really nice man, a good friend of mine at that time. A real Welsh charmer with the women, ideal for sales with his charm.

That's ok Tricia, I can see all the faces but not so hot on names. There were so many in the O & S Dept, the whistler may have been in there. Do you remember any of the girls in the Postal and Filing Dept? Mrs Stringer was the supervisor when I first started. I can see so many faces in the Drawing Office and I remember Mr Malin very well, having done some work for him. I wish when we draw our pension they would let us keep more of our memories. Lol Hope you are keeping ok and taking care. Wave

Hi Dreamtime. Sadly I can't remember any of the girls' names in Postal and Filing. I'm not very good at names but can remember faces quite well. Take care and stay safe. Thumbs up

My father in law Peter Watson used to work at Alfred Herbert, Coventry, between 1960 and 1988. I am looking for people who may have known Peter to try to get some photos and memories of his time there. He worked at Sandvik after working at Alfred Herberts and I've managed to track down some people and photos from then and would like to do the same for Alfred Herbert. I thought there might be a Facebook Group for Alfred Herbert but couldn't find one, so pleased I have been able to find this forum.

Helen, That's a turn up for the books. That's the first time I have seen A. H. Ltd. mentioned on the forum. I hope Sharon gets lucky but it's been so long ago now. I remember a few names from way back then and I wish I could have helped. Roll eyes

Hello & thank you Argon, A fabulous presentation regards a major player in Coventrys history. The saddest parts of my working life was dealing with business that were being wound up. The misery of redundancies & devastated communities. The common thread was lack of vision by whoever was steering the business. Not always. Sometimes it was a deliberate act from a takeover. Sometimes it was overblown politics. Again, thank you for sharing.

I was very happy working at Herbert's for 6 years (Red Lane) and left there in 1960. I remembered many staff members. Mr. Hemmings was our Shorthand and Typing instructor and got me as far as 100 words per minute. I thought that was quite an achievement for me. Roll eyes

I was employed at the Dole office for a couple of years in the early 70's. I was a ratings officer, working out the weekly payments for about 200 and meeting them when they came to sign on and pick up their payments. I watched that devastation play out week by week as proud working men and women slowly became despondent, depressed and eventually resigned to the idea of a long period of unemployment. The National Govt squeeze on local councils forced cuts which they tried to direct on areas that wouldn't have big effects on service delivery eg education, social services. You could see the decline in the upkeep of parks and gardens and the general state of public buildings. Many of the businesses you speak of may well have lacked vision but many would have relied on the spending power of Coventry citizens and the collapse of that would have been difficult to imagine or plan for. In all it was probably the saddest part of my working life as well.
