Tile Hill

Yes, welcome Gordon. The school that was known as Tile Hill Wood was a girls only school (until relatively recently when it was also renamed) but that was only opened mid-50's. It could be Templars Primary School which was on Tile Hill Lane. I'm sure the original school was pre-war at least, though that was demolished in what I think was the later 80's/early 90's. It could have been The Junior Technical School that was opened in 1919. Not sure where it was, but all pupils were transferred to Woodlands on its opening in 1954.

Mick,I think you will find that the Junior Technical School was based at the Technical College, Butts. I have a few school magazines somewhere and a school badge which I will dig out plus a few cuttings. Jack Selby tried with some success to form an 'old boys' association about 10 years ago which met monthly for coffee and a chat. Very few will still be alive. Jack died the day before his 100 birthday, bur did have the satisfaction of seeing his birthay card from the Queen.

It was Barclays Bank, Neil! 1946 Telephone Directory lists it as 513 Fletchamstead Highway.

I know it’s an old post, but just for a bit of information, Mr Toogood lived at 159 Duggins Lane, opposite Key Stone (as it was called). His vegetable plot was right next to his house and is now occupied by 2 detached bungalows.

I noticed today, that this old bank is now a fishing tackle shop.

Took my dog Harley for a walk yesterday and noticed the gates were locked on the BRUKER building on Banner Lane. All of the grounds are fenced off and the demolition diggers are there. At the end of the grounds is a big red board about the houses that are to be built.

Mick, as you are that close can you tell me if my old school, Woodlands, is still standing. If not what is planned for the site ? I watched drone footage of it after it must have closed, a bit depressing.

Hi matchle55. The board outside has "Woodlands Academy" on it with a picture of the old school badge. There are 10 all weather pitches either 5 or 7 aside. Looking on an aerial view, all of the old school buildings are still standing, but look run down. You can see Gibraltar from the road. Im not sure if the rest of the school is used for anything else? The running track looks completely overgrown.

matchle55 my old school as well - I go past now and then. As Mick says its still there but most of the old buildings are very run down with many a boarded up window. There is now a Football/Sport building run independently to the left of the main entrance which does well although its not part of the original school. The running track disappeared some time ago. Over the last few years there's been rumours it was going to be a housing estate and even a new home for the Sky Blues but I've not seen any work done on the actual school since the 1990's. I did go back in once circa 2010 when one of my lads played Rugby there. There is plenty going on at the old Tile Hill Wood Girls school though which is now part of West Coventry Academy (which they like to call Schools now) which is now a mixed school.

Both Woodlands boys and Tile Hill Wood girls schools are due to be demolished. The fall in demand for single sex schools is given as the reason. The replacement school is being built on the site of Tile Hill Wood and goes under the name West Coventry Academy. There is an open day on Saturday July 15th from 10am-11:30am so former students and staff can visit before demolition begins.

Hi mcsporran Thanks for the up-date. I was always of the assumption that the Leonardo science block was a listed building?
