Much Park Street

Thanks for the responses so far - so if that's the back of the Odeon that can't have been taken from MPS itself then can it? Is it the back of the Dun Cow we can see from perhaps an alleyway at its rear?

Rethinking, I guess that it's the side of the Odeon. I think the view follows the red arrow but more buildings had been demolished. So essentially this is Jordan Well. It's after the Dunn Cow had gone.

Another walk find on the way to the Flying Standard on Saturday - A Hammerton's family burial which is almost certainly the same family who ran the Silk Factory on MPS (pictured earlier in this thread (no pun intended!)) Note the Ribbons etched into the stone - Situated in Holy Trinity graveyard alongside Priory Row -

The excellent Coventry Smorgasbord FB page have come up trumps again with this new view of the uncovered MPS ruins following bomb damage - BOMB REVEALS ANCIENT WALLS RELIC OF MIDDLE AGES The blast of a Nazi bomb has brought to light the remains of an ancient Coventry building that had been hidden for many years. The brickwork of two small houses in Much Park Street, near the old Judge's House, was demolished and burned to reveal the shell of a sandstone structure the was once a crypt, a first storey room, and an attic. It is an architectural mystery at the moment. Was it a church, or a private house? The floor dimensions are about 30ft by 15ft. There seems to have been a double-arched crypt, of which distinct traces of the groining and of one of the supporting pillars and its capital are clearly visible. Mr J B Shelton, the Coventry antiquarian, has formed the opinion that the building was either the house of a notable Coventry man of the 14th century, or that it had some religious significance, as indicated by the presence of the crypt. Other experts incline to the former view. Mr Shelton has discovered interesting mason's marks on the walls which give an indication of the age of the building, and to a degree the identity of the builder. Resembling a convicts "broad arrow" placed horizontally, these mason's marks are found on some of the most famous medieval buildings of Coventry including the Cathedral and St. Mary's Hall. - November 1940. Just noticed this from Google Maps dated 2008. It's probably their last capture of The Greyhound.

I've merged the background of two of the Cooper photos to produce a view of Court 5 after the war. On the left I think you have the end of 4. At the end you can see 6 and 7. To the right you have 8 and 9. Those two butted up to the stone building that still remains.

I have had considerable help identifying the Lea Francis buildings so thank you. In 1948 Lea Francis expanded into the Charlesworth works at 128 Much Park Street. My understanding is that the Charlesworth works was entered via a gabled archway. Does anyone have photographs of this area please or indeed about the rest of the Charleworth works.

Hi Mike. Sorry but additional photos of the site to the one I posted last time are yet to turn up. It had been demolished before the brewery was comprehensively photographed after the war. I take it the Lea Francis book didn't help? There are aerial photos of the site here. If you type Coventry much park into the search, it will centre over the street. Zoom out slightly and click on the orange layer to see an aerial view. Purple squares are angled views. The two best images are here and here. Both photos are orientated with the south at the top. Below is a slightly better copy of the pre war photo. If you see the gap in the building line, to the right was the new brewery building (then called Phillips and Marriott) with the arched windows. Charlesworth was next door and the entrance was an archway under the building. If you zoom in, you can just see it, behind a street lamp.
