I used to walk from Foleshill to Highfield Road during the years after the end of the war and usually climbed up the steps of the raised area called I believe Spion Kop to get a decent view.

Bus from Charter Avenue/Marler Road down to The Meda alone at the age of 8 in 1962 (would you let any child do that nowadays, you'd have Social Services battering your door down) and followed the grown ups to The City. Once in the ground made my way down to the front, as was the custom for little kids behind the goal in the covered end (later the West Stand) at HR. The smell of beer and cigarettes on the terraces, Ellimans Rub on the legs of the players, the singing the swearing the swaying of the crowd was fantastic, I was instantly hooked. Aged 9 back in 1962 my dad and I walked from Radford to Highfield Road to watch England Youth play Switzerland. It was abandoned after 8 minutes due to fog. So we walked home again. In the fog. And on a school night. Who thought that was a good idea?

My first match must have been around 1959, with my Dad and Grandad (Ernie Gough, landlord of the Coombe Abbey Inn). They played in blue and white striped shirts and were nicknamed The Bantams in the pre Jimmy Hill era. Manager was Billy Frith, his wife was my teacher at Centaur Road Junior School. Attended on and off for the next 6-7 years, including the FA Cup defeat by Man United in 1964.

I remember being carried, sitting on my dad's shoulder from Canterbury St to Highfield Rd to watch on 2 occasions the yearly Traditional Boxing Day Match of 1933 & 4 Beautiful clear days but freezing cold which put me off soccer for good.

Blimey - can't match some of these! My first game with grandad 5th round of the FA Cup v Sunderland. Won 2-1. Then the quarter final against Man U, lost 3-1 to the eventual cup winners. First league game later that season v Halifax, won 5-4. A George Hudson hatrick on his debut. Hooked!
